If you ask most people, they would tell you that Irish Spring soap is good for keeping yourself clean. However, the great majority of people don’t realize that it has plenty of other uses as well.
As a matter of fact, one woman in particular has been using Irish Spring soap for years, and not just in the shower. Her neighbors quickly figured out why!
You see, this woman realized that this strong smelling soap can keep herbivores such as rabbits and deer away from her garden simply by cutting it into small pieces, putting these pieces into socks, and then tying the socks up to stakes and putting them in the ground. She was sick and tired of these herbivores messing up her garden, so she tried this unorthodox strategy.
The key is to fully inspect all of your plants. If they have damaged leaves or stems, and chances are they have fallen prey to various pests or predators. Deer and rabbits can cause significant damage to your garden.
Young flowers, fruits, vegetables, and even little clovers can all be susceptible to this damage.
In a nutshell, if you want a well-maintained garden, you have to put work into it. Otherwise, your garden will look like it’s been abandoned. Of course, your first step is to fully understand just what might be attacking your garden in the first place.
You should take a close look at any of the remaining leaves or stems on your plants. If your plants are being attacked by insects, they will tend to leave jagged edges on the stems or leaves.
However, if your plants are falling victim to mammals such as rabbits or deer, they will either completely eat the leaves or devour the plant completely. One good analogy to go by would be that the plant is here one day, but gone the next.
Of course, if you want to keep these mammals at bay, then this is where the Irish Spring soap comes in. This type of soap will serve as a good repellent, simply because these mammals find the smell unpleasant. Here are some steps to keep in mind:
1. Cut the Irish Spring soap bar into some small cubes. Generally, a half-inch in diameter is best. But this isn’t an exact science. The main thing is that you want plenty of small cubes to spread around your garden.
2. Drop two of the small pieces of soap into your pouch or sock. Make sure that you tie the sock together with a knot so that the soap cubes are securely fastened inside.
3. Staple your homemade pouch to the end of a stake and then drive the stake into the ground. Additionally, you should make sure that these stakes are at least five to ten feet apart.
4. Keep a close watch over your garden over the next several weeks. If you continue to see damaged plants, it could mean that you are not using enough soap.
Finally, you should be aware that this homemade repellant will only drive mammals away and not insects. You will have to find a different solution for this nuisance. However, Irish Spring does well for warding off the mammals for sure!
