It wasn’t a rock, it was definitely alive, but this airborne creature didn’t have wings or even feathers. There are lots of things that could suddenly come flying through your car windshield when you’re driving down the highway but this wasn’t one of the normal ones. Out of the corner of her eye, Latonya Lark spotted a UFO coming in for a landing in front of her totally freaked out brother.
The creature was flying but didn’t have wings
Latonya Lark and her brother Kevin Grant were recently cruising along on the Harry S. Truman Parkway in Savannah, Georgia, when she was startled by a flying object that embedded itself halfway through her shattered windshield. The poor creature turned out to be a turtle.
“I saw out of the corner of my eye what I thought was a brick,” Lark relates. “I told my brother, ‘Oh my God there’s a brick flying across the highway.’ No sooner than I said that, it impacted my vehicle. It scared me so bad, it sounded like a bomb went off and glass went all over my brother.” He was treated for minor cuts from all the flying glass.
While they are concerned for the turtle, they decided that it was better that it didn’t make it all the way through the windshield. “We’re so grateful because this could have been fatal,” she said. “But the really sad part is that the turtle died. That was really upsetting,” Ms. Lark regrets. The unfortunate reptile was pronounced dead at Savannah Animal Care.
Not as uncommon as it seems
You can rest assured that when Latonya calls the incident in to her insurance company she’s going to have some explaining to do. “No, really, a turtle.” They may not fly but this one did. He came in like Gamera from the old Godzilla movies. It’s one of the oddest things a person could encounter on the highway.
Police admit they don’t know for sure how the creature ended up airborne, but they suspect that another vehicle struck the turtle and launched it into the air. It isn’t a common occurrence but has been known to happen.
In 2016 an Orlando woman got a similar surprise when a turtle came flying into her windshield on the I-4. Another driver in South Carolina was shell shocked by a turtle flung up in front of him by another vehicle.
