Trump Ripped for ‘Hurtful’ Words during Michigan Rally

Trump Michigan Rally

There are times when President Trump almost seems like he willingly sabotages himself.

Wednesday night was one such case when he implied the late Congressman Dingell was in hell.

But It Was a Joke

Being in Michigan, Trump was taking a shot at a local Democrat who voted for impeachment, Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI).

When the late congressman passed away, Trump noted how his wife, current Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell, had reached out to him about allowing Dingell to receive honors.

At one point in the conversation, Dingell stated that she knew her husband was looking down and would approve, which is when Trump landed the clunker.

Trump, trying to crack a joke, stated, “Maybe he’s looking up.”

Even the partisan Trump crowd let out a few groans on that one…

Stay on Point

These are the types of gaffes that are going to hurt Trump and why he can’t just leave well enough alone is beyond me.

This particular gaffe was a two-striker, though.

He was making fun of a grieving widow and taking a shot at a dead person, not exactly a good look.

As Bret Baier noted, Trump is winning on all fronts right now and a significant number of Independent voters are now behind him, so why risk losing them with this type of rhetoric?

Dingell heard about the President’s comment and answered him on Twitter, stating, “Mr. President, let’s set politics aside.

“My husband earned all his accolades after a lifetime of service.

“I’m preparing for the first holiday season without the man I love.

“You brought me down in a way you can never imagine and your hurtful words just made my healing much harder.”

If he responds to her words, it makes it even worse but regardless, he has taken a monumental win and flipped the news cycle against him.

See, there is no upside to this for Trump and, in fact, it has nothing but a downside.

His words here feed into everything Democrats say about him, and now he even has his allies in the media shaking their head and distancing themselves from these comments.

To quote the wise and great Trey Gowdy, “We’re gonna win right now. Don’t mess it up.”
