When people awoke on Thursday morning, they were greeted with the news that one of the top House Democrat committee chairmen passed away overnight.
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) died at 2:45 a.m. this morning at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
According to reports, Cummings had several long-term health problems to which he finally succumbed.
Missing from Work
Cummings had not been performing his duties in the House since a recent medical procedure.
He was only supposed to be out for about a week, but it turns out things were far more serious than anyone realized.
Cummings has been a thorn in the side of President Trump, which is putting it mildly.
As his district continued to struggle, Cummings instead devoted his time to the impeachment efforts against Donald Trump.
Tributes Pouring In
As expected, the usual niceties have been pouring in from liberals and politicians on both sides of the aisle.
For some reason, everyone feels the need to be nice when someone passes away… I do not.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated, “He was not just a congressman, he was a great man.”
Baltimore Mayor Young stated that “people throughout the world have lost a powerful voice and one of the strongest and most gifted crusaders for social justice.”
Even President Trump himself poured it on, stating, “My warmest condolences to the family and many friends of Congressman Elijah Cummings. I got to see first hand the strength, passion and wisdom of this highly respected political leader. His work and voice on so many fronts will be very hard, if not impossible to replace!”
I will not take that route.
I did not like Cummings when he was alive, so I will surely not post a tribute now that he is dead.
While I fully respect and admire the work he has done for civil rights, the fact of the matter is that he was a horrible Representative for the people of Maryland.
Parts of his district are ridden with crime, poverty, and are absolutely overridden with drugs.
He is exactly the type of person that I want out of Washington… someone who has spent decades in office ignoring the people he is supposed to represent while accumulating wealth of his own.
He openly lied to the American people throughout this witch hunt so no, I will not mourn his death, but nor will I celebrate it.
He is dead, the day goes on, so be it.
