Remains Of Firefighter Killed On 9/11 Found Almost 18 Years Later

Authorities in New York confirmed on Thursday that remains recently found, are those of a firefighter who died in the line of duty. Firefighter Micheal Haub,34, died in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001 while he was attempting to rescue people.

In lieu of the recent discovery of Haub’s remains, his family have arranged for a second wake. The second wake for Haub will take place on Tuesday September 10. The wake will take place a day before the the 18th anniversary of his death. The ceremony will be held at Krauss Funeral Home in Franklin Square.

The first wake for Haub was held in 2002 at the same funeral home, Michael Bloomberg attended along with the FDNY Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta. The New York Medical Examiner’s office said they were able to identify additional remains found at Ground Zero in 2002. The identification was made with DNA that was not available in 2002.

Haub’s Life Long Dream Was To Become A New York City Firefighter

Haub started his career as a firefighter as a probationary officer with the FDNY in 1999 when he was 31. On September 11, 2001 he had advanced to a firefighter and was on the job for two years. He was stationed at the Midtown Firehouse, just a stones throw from the Twin Towers.

On the day of the tragedy, he was with a team from Ladder Co 4 that responded to one of many fires in the South Tower. Haub and seven other members of his team were killed in the South Tower. Haub’s journey to becoming a full fledged firefighter started with a volunteer position with the Rosyln Heights Highland Fire Department. Haub’s leaves behind two children, a son Micheal and daughter Kierston. His son uttered his first word, ‘Dada’ on September 11, 2001.

There Are Still 1109 Remains Of Victims That Still Remain Unidentified

The DNA techniques that are in place today, have much improved since the 9/11 tragedy. The technology available today, has made the identification of several previously unknown victim remains as of recent.

This past July the New York Medical Examiner’s office was able to identify the remains of victim number 1644. It was a woman, at the request of the woman’s family her identify has not been made public. In June of 2019, the remains of a man who died in in the event was also positively identified.

The family of that man, also chose to keep his identity private. An official with the Medical Examiner’s office, said, “these people have been through immense pain these last almost two decades”. Now that a positive identification has been made, they start the grieving process all over again. There have been identifications made through the last 18 years, some family members didn’t mind the names of their loved ones made public. Others had a very different position on the issues surrounding the identification of casualties of 9/11.
