Sometimes the best solution to a problem is also one of the most obvious. Such is the case with household concerns. For example, there are often times where a common, everyday item can have some uncommon and incredible extra uses. One example of this would have to be salt. This little spice is pretty amazing stuff, and author Patty Moosbrugger wrote a book called “Solve It With Salt” where she details just how amazingly versatile that salt can be. It definitely can make our lives that much better, and I’ll even give you a hint: although it has been seasoning our food for millennia now, there are plenty of other ways that salt can make our lives better:

Cleaning Out Your Garbage Disposal

If you combine a handful of ice cubes and a half-cup of table salt, you should be able to clean out your disposal as long as you run it with a small stream of water. Gently push the ice with a wooden spoon with a long handle or something similar to that.

If you keep this configuration going for at least two minutes, it should clean off a lot of the grime and gunk from the blades of your disposal. Turn the water off and then you’re done.

Soften Up That New Pair of Jeans

If you’ve ever been excited about getting that new pair of jeans and then you realize just how uncomfortably stiff they are, then this tip is for you.

All you have to do is add a half-cup of salt to the wash cycle and pair it with the detergent. It will soften and supple out your jeans so that you won’t have to “break them in.”

Keep Your Iron Clean

You can use salt to remove some of the gunk build-up on your iron. Just sprinkle some of the salt on some wax paper or a cloth and then move the iron over it. Repeat as often as needed. This concoction will act just like sandpaper and won’t scratch the iron either!

Add It To Your Cake Icing

All you have to do is just add a dash of salt to your cake icing and it will continue to retain its eye appeal down to the last piece.

Keep Things From Browning

If you are peeling potatoes, pears, or apples and are concerned about them browning, just drop them into some colder, salted water, and you can be sure that they will retain their color!

Keep Your Pots Looking New

Pour two tablespoons of salt into each empty container. Combine this with ice and make sure that the pot is about one-third full. After vigorously swirling the contents in a round motion, you should notice that the stains from the coffee and other liquid will come right off. Dump the contents right after this and then put the pots in the dishwasher.

Keep Your Milk Fresh

If you add a small amount of salt to your favorite milk, it will remain fresh longer. Make sure that you shake it up well, and don’t worry – it won’t affect the taste. However, this salt will prevent bacteria from forming in the milk.

Avoid Splattering Grease

If you add a tiny bit of salt to your oil when you are frying food, it will keep the grease from splattering all over the top of your stove.

Keep Things Crisp

If you want to store lettuce and spinach let a gourmet chef, then get a load of this tip. If you keep them in a saltwater bath in the fridge, these green food items will remain crisp and clean. Simply rinse them off to serve.

Prevent Your Pantyhose From Developing Runs

Mixing two cups of salt and putting them in a gallon of warm water is one great way to protect your pantyhose from runs. After rinsing the hose off, you can set them off to drip-dry. Of course, you can save the soaking liquid for use in the future if you want. The salt water will toughen the fibers and make them more resistant to runs.

Take Out Porcelain Stains

If you have a porcelain tub or sink, then chances are you are already aware of just how difficult they can be to keep clean. They tend to get stained with watermarks and other components that can be hard to remove. However, if you mix a cup of salt with some baking soda, you will create a gentle concoction that will scour these porcelain surfaces without scratching them. Using the mixture just like any other scouring powder ensures that your porcelain surface will be looking nice for many years to come!

As you can see, it is just remarkable to think about some of the things that salt can do to help you around the house! You can truly do amazing things with this nondescript item!
