Tennessee police were forced to spend days chasing down the son of a judge. The violent criminal was wanted for the murder of James William Warner, nephew of a state lawmaker. Even worse than the killing was the devastation to the victim’s family.

Judge’s son arrested

According to an official press release put out by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, following “a multi-day manhunt, law enforcement authorities in Tennessee captured a man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of the nephew of a member of the state House of Representatives.”

The killer has been identified as 25-year-old Samuel Earl Rich, son of Bedford County Judge Charles Rich.

The 22-year-old victim’s mother broke the internet with a heartbreaking image of her boy’s dog, lying atop the grave of her son, “after his burial.” James William Warner, or “Will” to his friends, was a “typical country boy” who “loved life and loved people.”

His mother later added, “Will was larger than life and never met a stranger.” Will’s unnamed girlfriend is fighting for her life after Rich allegedly shot her in the head too.

At the break of day on Friday, August 13, a Metro Utilities Systems water crew discovered Warner’s body. The timing of events isn’t clear from reports but from what police have pieced together, “Rich drove Warner to the area located at the end 35th Avenue North and shot him to death and then left his body to be found in the street.”

The judge’s son got his name on the state’s Most Wanted list because “he allegedly attempted to murder Warner’s girlfriend.”

Treated with serious injuries

According to police sources, they believe “Rich shot the woman in the head early Friday morning at a home on Temple Ford Road.” She was “airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she was being treated with serious injuries.”

Not long after that, they discovered a stolen “vehicle owned by Warner or his girlfriend.” They found it on Smith Chapel Road in the Raus area on Friday, which led authorities to believe Rich may have been nearby. He wasn’t. The son of a judge remained well hidden. The “subsequent manhunt was not immediately successful in locating him.”

DA General Robert Carter confirms that the judge talked his son into surrendering on Sunday.

He appeared at the Sheriff’s office and was taken into custody without incident. Rich is being held without bond and the investigation is ongoing.

This isn’t the first time the Judge’s son had a run in with the law. State records indicate that Rich “was convicted of a drug offense in 2018 and sentenced to a three-year combination of incarceration and probation.”

This time around, Rich “faces charges of attempted murder and theft in relation to the shooting of Warner’s girlfriend.” They’re still typing up the murder charges related to the death of Warner.
