Well, we knew it would not take long after Donald Trump reportedly called General James Mattis an āoverratedā General for Mattis to fire back at him.
During the Alfred E. Smith dinner, Mattis landed several shots against Trump, including making fun of Donald Trumpās bone spurs that allowed him to avoid the draft.
āMad Dogā Strikes Back
Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) brought Mattiās name up during a meeting to stress his point that Trump was making a mistake about leaving northern Syria.
Trump then responded by calling Mattis āthe worldās most overrated general,ā a title which Mattis is more than happy to take on.
Mattis likened the āinsultā to when Trump called Meryl Streep an overrated actress.
Where Mattis really hit Trump hard, though, was about Trumpās bone spurs.
As the rumors go, Trumpās father pulled some strings to have Trump excused from service by getting a doctor friend to write a note that Trump had bone spurs.
Mattis stated he earned his spurs on the battlefield whereas Trump earned his spurs with a doctorās noteā¦
Dangerous Ground
We have long supported Trump here, but we have also warned that he gets himself into hot water with comments sometimes that would be better left unsaid.
Criticizing anything about General Mattis is a mistake and simply put, no good comes from it.
Mattis was and remains widely popular with service members and insulting a decorated hero such as Mattis will not win Trump any votes.
Trumpās comments were surely not meant for public ears and I have little doubt he respects the hell out of Mattis, but Schumer got the soundbite he wanted when he brought up Mattisā name.
If Trump can figure out a way to dial back the insults in moments such as this rather than serving up bulletin board material, he will be tough to beat come next November.
Please, President Trump, save the insults for Democrats and leave our military members, especially those with an impeccable reputation and career, out of it.
Nothing good comes from slinging mud at General Mattis and now that Mattis has clearly shown a liking to throwing some mud back at Trump, this could prove to be a colossal mistake on the part of Donald Trump.
