One of the best pieces of advice I was ever given by my dad is to always be nice to a repairman.
The reason is simple, is that if you knew how to fix it you would be doing itself.
Give you a personal example here. About three years ago my wife and I decided to cut the cable and switch to an antenna like we all had decades ago. Now, you can get a whole mess of channels so it made sense.
But I had to make the decision of finding someone to install a good antenna on the roof of my house.
I found someone, and when they came over it happened to be right around the time my wife was bringing home some fried chicken from the grocery store.
We ate while he was up on the roof and when he was done he came down shortly after we had finished eating.
I know it was a pain in the rear being up on the roof like that, so as a gesture of a good job I gave him all of the leftovers. I mean all of them.
He said it was great because he and his wife were trying to figure out what to have for dinner that night and this took the guesswork out of it.
When I got the bill a week later, he only charged me half of what it should cost.
Always be nice to repairmen.
Jesse and Marie Hulscher found this out not too long after they had just had their baby.
Around the same period of time they got their child home from the hospital, their furnace went out.
Now, when the repairman came over he could have charged them, but seeing that with a new baby they needed all the money they could get.
When Jesse called the furnace company, he never in his wildest dreams believed that when he got the bill from the furnace repair company that there would be no charge.
Sometimes, repair folks do things just to be nice.
It’s honestly something we need more of in the world.
