Cartel killers arrested in Mexico

Roberto González Montes is behind bars facing murder charges. Montes is the alleged ring leader of the La Linea cartel which operates in northern Mexico.

The arrest came after a massive multi-agency investigation of the mass murder of several Mormon families last year. The Mormon families have long ties to northern Mexico and they hold both United States and Mexican citizenships.

The shooting appears to be a case of mistaken identity. Last year, La Linea was in the midst of a bloody turf war against their rivals the Sinaloa Cartel when the innocent Mormon families crossed their path.

The caravan of SUVs was traveling up a remote stretch of road heading towards the border state of Sonora where they were planning to attend a wedding celebration.

Suddenly, gunfire erupted from the roadsides in an ambush which left nine out of the seventeen passengers dead. Six others were hit by gunfire but survived.

Amongst the dead was a mother who stepped out of the SUV to confront the gunmen. Dawna Ray Langford was murdered along with her children, ranging from 30-years-old down to her 8-month-old twins.

The Mormons were all residents of La Mora, which is a decades-old settlement in Sonora Mexico founded as a part of the old Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mexican police confirmed the cartel boss was arrested along with two associates in the northern state of Chihuahua.

Drug wars in Mexico

In a recent list of top 50 murder capitals of the world, Mexico holds the top five slots. The number one murder capital of the world is currently Tijuana, a city that shares a border with San Diego, California.

Mexico goes on to dominate the list of murder capitals, with a whopping 19 out of 50 cities. These are not stats to be proud of. The violence is mostly cartel vs cartel rivalries, but civilians do get caught in the crossfire at times.
